ANOTHER FOR THE BOOKS
POZORRUBIO – A policewoman assigned to this town’s police station, delivered her second child under unusual circumstances, short of a miracle, and in the most odd place.

PO1 Stephanie Novelas delivered her healthy baby boy in a natural fashion, ahead of her time for an expected Caesarian procedure, not in a hospital but inside the police chief’s personal vehicle.

PO1 Shiela Sandoval (foreground in uniform) watches  PO1 Liezel Lorenzana cradle the baby with the umbilical cord still attached to the mother,  P01 Stephanie Novelas, while on their way to hospital on board their police chief’s vehicle.

Novelas, who had expected to go on leave on March 3, Friday for a scheduled surgery on March 6, suddenly felt stomach cramps shortly after the station’s  Monday flag ceremony.

It was PO1 Shiela Sandoval, a registered nurse, who suddenly found herself assisting in the delivery of a newborn inside a moving SUV, owned by P/Chief Inspector Melecio Mina, town police chief, that rushed them from Novelas’ house in Rosario town in La Union to LU Medical Hospital in Agoo town.

Sandoval and two other colleagues, PO1 Liezel Lorenzana and their driver, PO1 Benson Aturdido, requested Mina for use of his Fortuner to bring Novelas first to her house in Rosario town for her clothes en route to the hospital.

As they rushed to Agoo, Sandoval became anxious as she saw the baby already beginning to come out. She said Novelas was calm throughout.

The baby’s left foot began to appear, then followed by the right foot, then the hands.  Sandoval had to prompt Novelas to exert more effort to continue the natural delivery process to enable the baby’s head to be forced out.

“Tepay, isang matinding ire pa, kasi yung ulo ng lang ng bata lalabas na, kawawa naman siya baka di siya makahinga! Umire ka pa!”  Sandoval told Novelas.

Within seconds, Miguel Achilles was born.

The baby’s placenta and umbilical cord were still connected as Sandoval used only her bare hands in assisting in the delivery.

Sandoval said she was too nervous as it was her first time to assist delivery of a baby in a breech position through normal delivery and not in an operating room.

“It’s supposed to be Caesarian delivery considering the baby’s position,” Sandoval said.

Miguel Achiless is Novelas’ second baby.

Her husband who works in a fast food store said they have prepared the expenses for their baby’s delivery by Caesarian.

“Everybody, including our police chief and the baby’s dad, was surprised Novelas gave birth via normal delivery,” Sandoval said.

“We could only thank God for being with us especially during that time,” she added. (Tita Roces)
