A FUN run will kick off the observance of the Fire Month on March 7 in Dagupan City.

The “Takbo Laban sa Sunog” will be spearheaded by the regional office of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).

Romie Tungapalan fire marshal of the BFP in Dagupan said F/Chief Supt. Leonard Campanero, BFP national director for administration, will lead the fun run.

Tungpalan said there will also be fire drills scheduled in some schools in a bid to teach students and their teachers on how to prevent and what to do during fires.

While he acknowledged that BFP Dagupan has only one, out of three fire trucks that is operational, he said his station has enough manpower to respond ably to fire calls.

He expressed hope that with the help of Mayor Belen Fernandez, the Dagupan BFP will be among the first batch of beneficiaries of a brand new fire truck from the BFP national office this year.

The Dagupan City government has its own brand new fire engine, including a water tank mounted on a truck, being operated by the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO).

At the same time, Tungpalan considers Dagupan fortunate because the Chinese community maintains a Panda Firefighting Brigade while City Supermarket Inc. (CSI) has two fire engines that respond as well to any fire in the city.

He urged other big establishments in Dagupan to follow the example of CSI by having their own fire trucks not only for the benefit of their establishments but for the city as well.

He said BFP Dagupan can train personnel of establishments that have fire engines to become firefighters.

Meanwhile, Tungpalan announced that the BFP national office is recruiting 2,000 firemen this year, with at least 130 of them to be allocated for Region 1.

He said men and women who want to become firemen should file their applications before the BFP regional office in La Union. (Leonardo Micua)
