BINMALEY—This town, known as the Fish Bowl of Pangasinan, has launched the first local government unit (LGU) online radio in the country on March 2.

Joey dela Cruz, brainchild of the project with Mayor Simpicio Rosario, said Binmaley Online Radio provides news updates on LGU projects and advocacies to promote Binmaley and its people.

He said the mayor initially envisioned for the town to have its own radio station but it involved huge capital, “With the advent of modern technology and the social media, I told him there is now an internet radio,” Dela Cruz said in an interview with The PUNCH.

Dela Cruz said internet radio entails low monthly maintenance of $35 to VosCast, the unlimited audio streaming provider.

Binmaley Online Radio (binmaleyonlineradio.com) had its test web cast on Jan. 21 in time for the town fiesta celebration, schedules a 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. music program, with hourly news.

It has reached about 26 countries that already registered 4,000 ‘likes’ based on data available provided them, Dela Cruz said, made possible by listeners on Facebook.

He said Overseas Filipino Workers who are among their listeners are happy when they hear their requested songs being played through their webcast.

The town municipal hymn is also played every hour that serves as its station identification.

Dela Cruz worked for 16 years as DJ and subsequently as station manager. (Eva Visperas)
