THIS year’s Bangus Festival promises to be much bigger and more exciting with new events that could make it more interesting for tourists and the local folks.

Bangus Festival 2017 Executive Chairman Epee R. Rafanan said this year’s celebration will amaze visitors with the new events like “Galaw na Ogogaw”, “Zumbangus”, Search for “Mestisang Bangus” Gay Beauty Pageant, sand sculpture, amateur boxing, skim boarding, “Sayawan ed Tondaligan”, a fun run and a carnival at the Bangusan Village.

To officially open on March 31, the Bangusan Village, which will be located at the New De Venecia Extension, will also host a baratillo and a food court.

“We are hoping that we can bring in some food concessionaires, who can offer some food recipes that are not in our usual menu in the city,” said Rafanan.

The Bangusan Village will be open till June 30 in time for the celebration of Dagupan City’s Platinum Year on June 20 commemorating its 70th year as the only independent component city in Pangasinan and Region 1.

Rafanan further said the beach volleyball, “Galaw na Ogogaw”, among others will be held at the Tondaligan Blue Beach to showcase the recent development in the area as part of the city’s tourism promotion program.

“While everyone is happy with the development and revitalization of the Tondaligan Blue Beach initiated by Mayor Belen T. Fernandez, she finds it appropriate to hold some events in the area like the ‘Galaw na Ogogaw’ where people will enjoy watching the children play the old traditional Filipino games; beach volleyball, Zumbangus, sand sculpture, amateur boxing, skim boarding and ‘Sayawan ed Tondaligan’,” said Rafanan.

The top annual crowd-drawers, namely the “Gilon-Gilon ed Dalan”, “Festivals of the North”, “Bangusine”, Bangus Rodeo and “Kalutan ed Dalan” will remain the major events.

For the “Gilon-Gilon ed Dalan”, barangays will be clustered for the competition, and with the winner earns the right to represent the city in the “Festivals of the North.”

This year’s Bangusine will feature the old traditional recipes of cooking bangus in the different regions in the Philippines.

“The Search for Mestisang Bangus Gay Beauty Pageant will not just be about holding a pageant but it will be with a purpose,” said Rafanan because it will feature the LGBT community in a different light.

Rafanan expressed confidence that last year’s attendance record at the the Bangusan Street Party at the New De Venecia Highway that reached one million will be eclipsed this year.

Some 25,000 to 30,000 bangus raised from the fishponds of Dagupan are set to be grilled in this year’s “Kalutan” activity.

This year’s Bangus Festival will have its grand opening on April 16, though its soft opening is set on April 7 with the holding of exhibition and clinic by the Beach Volleyball Republic.

Mayor Fernandez said Dagupeños and their visitors will experience one of the most memorable Bangus Festival ever. (Joseph C. Bacani/CIO)
