THE demolition of illegal beach sheds inside the Tondaligan Park in Bonuan Blue Beach has spawned threats on the life of Park Administrator Albert Gregorio.

Gregorio, former councilman of Bonuan Gueset, said the death threats started to come his way a few days after a team led by City Engineer Virginia Rosario began demolishing the sheds on January 22 to give way to the complete rehabilitation of the park.

While he could not name the sources of the threats, he said he was quite certain it had something to do with the recent demolition because some lost their means of livelihood.

He said the owners of the illegal and unsightly sheds affected by the demolition blame him for their lost business activities.

Some of the sheds were reportedly used as sleeping quarters during the night while others use it as prostitution den and for illegal drug session.

He noted that vandalism and destruction of government properties in the park also became frequent.

Gregorio said 160 beach sheds, sari-sari-stores and comfort rooms were marked for demolition whose owners were also not paying taxes since 2003.

City Administrator Farah Decano, however, said that the beach sheds of 50 owners were spared from demolition upon presenting proofs of tax payments but she pointed out that soon their sheds will still have to be demolished for the rehabilitation project.

Gregorio said Mayor Belen Fernandez will build uniform sheds that will have no walls to allow visitors in the park an unobstructed view of the beach water.

Fourth District Congressman Christopher de Venecia also committed to construct a one-kilometer baywalk for residents and visitors. (Leonardo Micua)
