THE provincial government led by Governor Amado “Pogi” I.  Espino III commended some 13,200 barangay health workers (BHWs) all over the province for their ‘selfless sacrifices’ in helping the less-privileged sector in Pangasinan.

In the 2nd Barangay Health Workers Provincial Congress held on February 15 at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC) gymnasium, the provincial chief executive thanked the BHWs for the support they have been extending on their community especially at the grassroots where assistance is much needed.

Being a public servant for 17 years, Gov. Pogi said he is fully aware of the situation of the BHWs as he noted that it is their spirit of volunteerism that drives them to render community service without expecting any monetary compensation in return.

As such, the governor said the provincial government, as a simple gesture of gratitude, has distributed a small amount of amelioration or fund assistance to the unsung heroines amounting to P1,000 each.

Having stated this, Gov. Pogi disclosed that the provincial government will find ways to increase the fund assistance for all BHWs in 2018.

It can be recalled that the granting of yearly fund assistance to all BHWs started in 2008 under the term of former governor now 5th district Representative Amado T. Espino, Jr.

Meanwhile, Vice Governor Jose Ferdinand Z. Calimlim, Jr. stressed that since February is known as love month, the event served as a ‘renewal of vows’ between the provincial government and the BHWs.

On the other hand, Board Member Jeremy Agerico Rosario who chairs the committee on health said that upon the instruction of the governor, the provincial board will look for ways on how to improve the situation of the BHWs.

Dr. Jemuel Cardenas, who represented DOH-RO1 Asst. Secretary and Director IV Myrna Cabotaje, hailed the group and thanked them as well for their untiring effort in helping the government carry out its mission to achieve various program indicators.

Anchored on its theme: “BHWs Sama-sama, Tulong-tulong sa Pagsulong ng mga Programang Pangkalusugan sa buonglalawigan ng Pangasinan,” the provincial congress also featured an afternoon lecture on the Philippine Health Agenda 2017 facilitated by the Provincial Department of Health Office (PDOHO).
