SOME two hundred hectares of onion plantation in Bayambang are again threatened to be wiped out by fungi infestation.

According to Ricardo dela Masa, agricultural technologist in Bayambang, many parts of southern Barangays i.e. Manambong Norte, Manambong Parte, San Gabriel and Amancosiling are already affected with the infestation locally resulting in lislis or bulb rot and purple blotch which is caused by a fungi.

Jesus Lavarias, a farmer said, around one hectare of his onion plantation in Manambong is already affected.

He said, onion farmers in Bayambang are affected yearly with the infestation but government has not found nor provided any effective solution for it.

Ten years nang paulit-ulit ang problema pero wala namang tulong ang gobyerno maliban sa fungicide upang kontrolin ang paulit-ulit na problema,” Lavarias intoned.

Dela Masa explained, climate change is one of the reasons for the infestation.

He said the infection starts with occasional rains.
