URDANETA CITY—The city government-owned Urdaneta City University (UCU) received last month its greatest Christmas gift yet – a four-storey building with 24 classrooms from the Travellers International Hotel Group Inc. (TIHGI) and Resorts World Philippines Cultural Heritage Foundation, Inc. (Resorts World Foundation) through the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR).

The new school building in UCU, which is one of the projects of Resorts World Foundation, will benefit students of Arts and Languages, Engineering, Architecture and Education.

UCU also received 100 computer units and a generator.

The total cost of donation from Resorts World Foundation reached close to P68 million.

UCU President Elizabeth Montero, who received the donation, said, “Because of these organizations, quality education is now within our reach”.

“It’s a wonderful and amazing opportunity and experience for a local university to be receiving such a donation through the valiant efforts of PAGCOR personalities particularly the (former) Chairman, Sir Cristino “Bong” Naguiat who encouraged Resorts World for the assistance,” Montero told The PUNCH.

She said UCU caters also to students from Pampanga, Zambales, Benguet, Tarlac, Aurora, Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya and Isabela.

In his speech during the turnover ceremony, PAGCOR Assistant Vice President for Community Relations and Services Arnel Ignacio reiterated the state-owned gaming firm’s commitment to help improve the quality of education in the country through the agency’s school building project.

“Through the commitment of Resorts World Foundation in allocating part of their funds to support PAGCOR’s projects and social responsibility programs, we were able to make all of this possible,” he said.

Atty. Ma. Georgina Alvarez, TIHGI’s chief legal officer and executive director of the RWF, affirmed its support to PAGCOR’s nation-building projects.

“We believe that it is important to partner with the government in providing modern, world-class facilities so that students may continue to nurture their dreams and hopefully, in the future, contribute to a better Philippines,” Alvarez said.

Third year UCU student Mariela Fernandez was overjoyed that she and her classmates can finally study in classrooms conducive for learning. (Tita Roces)
