NOTING a Facebook post that it now takes 30 minutes to one hour to reach one’s destination in the downtown area, the Dagupan City Council decided it will conduct a consultative meeting on January 11 with officials of the Public Order and Safety Office (POSO) to determine if the five installed traffic lights in the city are, or are not helping ease traffic flow.

The meeting was proposed by Councilor Jose Netu Tamayo, chair of the committee on laws and ordinances, amid reports that even if the holidays are over, gridlocks still occur along the main streets of Dagupan, particularly along Perez Boulevard, Traffic Post No. 1 at the intersection of A. B. Fernandez Avenue, Arellano Street and M. H. Del Pilar Street, as well as along the road in Bonuan Gueset.

The Facebook post by an angry motorist, said Tamayo, stated that from Pantal, it now takes up to one hour, from 10 to 20 minutes before, to reach Nepo Mall notwithstanding the traffic lights in the downtown area.

“We would like to know from POSO ‘s monitoring of the traffic situation since those traffic lights were installed,” said Tamayo, a lawyer.

The consultation meeting with POSO will be conducted by the city council’s committees on transportation and public utilities as well as the committees on laws and ordinances as well as all other city council standing committees, possibly in the presence of representatives from the city legal office and the police.

Tamayo said one solution if the traffic lights do not improve the flow of traffic is to make Perez Boulevard a one-way traffic, like A. B. Fernandez Avenue and M. H. Del Pilar Street.

Meanwhile, Councilor Alvin Coquia said motorists and pedestrians need more time to get used to the to the traffic lights.

The traffic lights are installed at the intersection of A. B. Fernandez Avenue. M. H. del Pilar Street and Arellano Street; at the intersection of A.B. Fernandez and RIzal Street and at the intersection of Perez Boulevard, Mayombo Road and M. H. Del Pilar Street.

Installed last January 6 are traffic lights at the corner of Perez Boulevard and Rizal Street and Perez Boulevard and Guilig Street. (Leonardo Micua)
