DAGUPAN’S Sangguniang Panlungsod is set to pass an ordinance approving the Ecological Solid Waste Management Plan of Dagupan City up to year 2024.

According to Councilor Jeslito Seen, the ordinance is in accordance with the provisions of Republic Act No. 9003, otherwise known as Ecological and Solid Waste Management Act.

This Act states that it is the declared policy of the State “to adopt a systematic, comprehensive and ecological solid waste management program”.

In proposing the ordinance, Seen said Dagupan City is currently undertaking measures to comply with the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 through segregation and source reduction pending the closure of the existing open dump site.

The open dumpsite located in Bonuan is already the subject of a Cease and Desist Order (CDO) from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) regional office.

Seen said the purpose of local planning mandated by RA 9003 is to effectively plan and adopt a systematic and comprehensive management and regulation of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) generated within the areas. (Leonardo Micua)
