LITTLE known Mangaldan-born Jesus Sembrano sped away from the main pack ten kilometers from the start towing Umingan pride and tour veteran Jesus Garcia and both never looked back to score a convincing 1-2 finish in the Asipukpokan ed San Fabian Mayor Agbayani Cycling Challenge held on January 7.

The duo clocked the 88 kilometers flat and hilly trek in two hours, 20 minutes and 18 seconds, with last year’s winner Manaoag son Ericson Obosa checking in third 58 seconds off the pace.

Rounding up the top ten were: Ysmael Gendrano and Aniceto Juanio (Manila), Rene Esteban (San Fabian), Jefferson Valdez (Asingan), Sherwin Carrera (San Fabian), Richard Aquino (Mangaldan) and JayR Obosa (Sual).

In the distaff side, Bugallon daughter and 2015 Singapore SEA Games gold medalist Marella Vania Salamat proved to her seven rivals that she’s the rider to reckon with when she scored an easy run in the 44-kilometer, winding course race. Salamat, 22, clocked the distance in 1:10:8 to outdistance her closest pursuer and national teammate Abegail Rombaon of Manila and Irish Wong of Olongapo City by four minutes and four seconds.

Romena Valdez of Asingan and Genisis Marana came in fourth and fifth, respectively.
In the 60-and-above category, Batangas City native Elpidio Untalan of Excellent Noodles team outsprinted the main pack of five in the last 300 meters with local bet Peter Camacho coming in second and host rider Alex Jugo finishing third while Ernesto Padua of Urdaneta City and Bernard Flores of Dagupan City landing fourth and fifth, correspondingly.

All winners received cash prizes, trophies and medals from Mayor Agbayani’s henchman Sonny Imbuido. (Jesus Garcia, Jr.)
