Firecracker vendors threaten to defy police

A CAT-and-mouse chase between the police and the firecracker vendors if the latter will insist on selling their wares outside of the designated selling area.

The firecracker vendors, Thursday, pleaded with Mayor Belen Fernandez to restore the firecracker zone in front of the West Central Elementary School so they can sell more and dispose of their items before the New Year.

They complained that at the designated selling area, a vacant lot under the New Pantal Bridge in Barangay Poblacion Oeste, was too far for regular customers.

They already threatened to force their way to sell in front of the West Central Elementary School on December 30 and 31, whether or not Mayor Fernandez will grant their request to sell in front of the school.

But acting police said P/Supt. Neil Miro, will not budge, and said anyone who sells outside the designated area will be arrested.

“They (firecracker vendors) should not try me”, Miro said,

Miro pointed out that the firecracker zone was transferred to its new location to protect the public.

The new firecracker zone was recommended to the “Iwas Paputok” Task Force by Dagupan City Fire Marshal Romeo Tungpalan, endorsed by Miro and approved by Mayor Fernandez.

Miro also cited the experienced slowdown in vehicular traffic along Burgos St. when the firecracker zone was in front of the school.

To the police, the interests of everyone is more important than the interests of only a few, Miro intoned.

Mayor Fernandez reminded the vendors one of the conditions she set to allow them to sell is to abide by all the rules and regulations set by the police and the BFP. (Leonardo Micua)
