Espino hails P’sinan medalists in Batang Pinoy Nat’l Finals

Lingayen – Governor Amado ‘Pogi’ I. Espino, III hailed 18 young Pangasinenses who won medals during the Batang Pinoy National Championships held recently in Tagum City, Davao del Norte.

Governor Espino, who took pride of the accomplishments of the Batang Pinoy athletes of Pangasinan, awarded them cash incentives during a courtesy call on the provincial chief executive held at the Urduja House on December 23, here.

Leading the winners from Pangasinan, Aljon Ravina pocketed Php15,000 (Php5,000 each) for winning three gold medals in athletics. Other gold medalists are: Francis James San Gabriel (athletics), Narayana RSI Mesina (Karatedo), Mark Francis Norial (Taekwondo) and John Mark Anastacio (Chess).

Kevin Melendez who earned two silver medals was given Php6,000 (Php3,000 each). Other silver medalists were: John Pauleen Singsing (Karatedo), JZ Singsing (Karatedo) and Claire Ysabelle Blanco (Taekwondo).

Receiving Php2,000 each were bronze medalists, namely: Iron Frias (Athletics), Richard Dean Bravo (Athletics), Khyssa Paltep (Karatedo), Ren Jericho Bistusio (Karatedo), Veronica Mae Tagorda (Taekwondo), Arlene Gomez (Wrestling), Julius Villabrille (Badminton), Jaya Pajarillo (Arnis) and Shaira Joy Rosario (Arnis).

Overwhelmed with the performance of Batang Pinoy athletes of the province, Governor Espino bared that the concept of having the Pangasinan Sports Academy that will be launched by the provincial government by January next year is for them “to further enhance their skills and competence on their sports inclinations.”

“’Yung maging full-scholars lang kayo sa larangan ng sports kapag kayo na ay nasa kolehiyo ay napakalaking bagay na sa akin,” Governor Espino told the athletes, who are 16 year-old and below.

Assuring that the sports development thrust of the province will be further strengthened under his leadership, Governor ‘Pogi’ said that sports facilities of the province shall also be enhanced and partnership with the Department of Education in terms of sports programs implementation shall be maintained.

He added that the sports academy shall accommodate in-house training of competitive and well-disciplined young Pangasinense athletes.

Meanwhile, Provincial Sports Director Modesto Operania said that ‘Team Pangasinan’ posted a strong performance in the Batang Pinoy national finals, ranking 18th in a field of 248 participating local government units with 3,000 athletes who battled for dominance in various sporting events.

Team Pangasinan which was composed of 75 athletes hauled 21 medals: 7 gold, 5 silver and 9.

Batang Pinoy is a sports development program initiated by the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Olympic Committee intended to discover promising athletes in the grassroots level. /Mark Gerry Naval Oblanca
