Save a life and a limb

SAFE fireworks as this country knew them some forty years ago do not and will not sell. Lighting safe firecrackers today is no longer enough to welcome the New Year; with it must be the bragging rights to have manufactured, sold, bought and lit those that come close to exploding a grenade! What sell today are fireworks that challenge the nerve, the courage and stupidity of the reveler.

As in any development of consumer products, manufacturers try to be inventive to keep their cash registers ringing, and therein lies the danger. Firecrackers simply have to be more powerful than the last and it is this that risks the life and limb of their customers.

Lighting deadly firecrackers as they come are precisely that – deadly! We believe that no amount of regulation imposed on firecracker manufacturing, sale and use will keep communities safe, all because of hubris and greed.

In this regard, we fully support efforts to totally ban firecrackers in Pangasinan. There is life after firecrackers as Davao City’s experience has shown. Since the use for firecrackers is seasonal, local governments can easily find ways to mitigate the situation for traditional (seasonal) workers.

But first, save a life and a limb tomorrow!

Loose cannon

THIS is now the way Sen. Leila de Lima treats her critics.  She calls Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II “a chronic liar like his boss.”  Aguirre’s boss is none other than President Duterte.

De Lima accuses the President of having ordered the recent riot at the New Bilibid Prison that led to the stabbing of high-value inmate Jaybee Sebastian.  The riot, she says, was staged to pressure Sebastian to “testify against me” during the House of Representatives’ inquiry into the drug trade in the NBP.

De Lima, facing illegal-drug raps, did not stop there.  She called Aguirre as “a secretary without balls.  What do you expect from a public official who fakes his own hair?”  Aguirre uses a wig.

She said: “If I were responsible for the stabbing [of Sebastian], it then seems that the NBP is run and managed by idiots.”

The politically correct way to describe De Lima’s perorations?  A loose cannon.
