THE Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) in Pangasinan has planted a total of 2,591,040 seedlings of various species in 292 hectares across the province for the year 2016 under the National Greening Program (NGP).

PENRO Officer Leduina Co of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) said planted were timber species like narra, batino, agoho, acacia mangium, acacia auri, eucalyptus, ylang-ylang as well as high-value fruit trees like cashew, guyabano, guava apple, santol including bamboo.

The three Community Environment and Natural Resource Offices (CENROs) also reported 100 percent accomplishment of their target areas planted under the NGP and the Bottom-Up-Budgeting Plantation: Alaminos (667,644 seedlings), Dagupan (1,126,444 seedlings) and Urdaneta (370,185 seedlings).

In Dagupan, 25,130 seedlings more were planted by CENRO in 50 hectares for the Ecosystem Research Development Bureau.

Co said NGP has generated jobs for those who plant and take care of the planted seedlings.

The National Greening Program is a flagship program of then President Benigno S. Aquino III that seeks to grow 1.5 billion trees in 1.5 million hectares nationwide within a period of six years, from 2011 to 2016 as a climate change mitigation strategy because it enhances the country’s forest stock to absorb carbon dioxide.  (Tita Roces)
