Villegas to parents: Tell the youth entire history of dictatorship

LINGAYEN-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas, president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines, appealed to parents to narrate the entire history of dictatorship to their children and not to deodorize what is ugly or beautify the wrong.

The archbishop made the appeal in a statement he issued for the Nov. 30 rally to protest the burial of former President Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

Villegas said the many protest rallies across the country have opened the wounds of Martial Law initially thought to have been forgotten and noted that the youth, perceived to be indifferent, have united in expressing their patriotic sentiments.

He said in whatever rally or symposium or protest to be done, “always remember that advocacy must come from concern and not revenge”.

He asked that issues and principles in the search for truth are what should be discussed and urged the people to pray that problems of the country would be solved in the soonest possible time in a way that is peaceful, humble and with healing.

If in your stand, joining rallies is needed and if you believe it is your Christian duty, I am gladly urging you to attend with my blessing,” Villegas said. “Love of country reflects faith in God,” he added.

He said that to forget those who died under the Martial Law is a mockery of their heroism.

“Do not forget. Stand up. Get involved. Don’t allow freedom to be lost once more,” Villegas said. (Tita Roces)
