Organic farming offered as livelihood alternative

REHAB PROGRAM IN 6TH DISTRICT

TAYUG—The drug users and pushers that surrendered in the Sixth District have been assured that they be provided with livelihood projects by tilling the land for organic farming.

P/Superintendent Virgilio Pascua, company commander of the Provincial Public Safety Company (PPSC) based in Tayug town, said the livelihood program was launched on Dec. 2 inside the camp.

He said part of the 20-hectare area of Camp Narciso Ramos in Tayug, the PPSC’s home, will be used for the program, specifically for organic farming, mushroom propagation and production of organic fertilizer.

A demo farm has been organized for the purpose.

A partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, regional advisory council of the police regional office 1 and other stakeholders were secured to ensure the feasibility and continuity of the program.

He added that the police would look for outlets to market the products of the rehabilitated participants.

“We do not think only of the present but look forward to where the program will lead them to so that even if I am no longer here in this camp, the program will be adopted by the next commander,” Pascua said.

He said if the result of the program proves to be successful, livestock growing of chickens, goats will be introduced.

Pascua said the rehab program will also offer training in food and beverage services including bartending.

There are about 150 to 200 drug users and pushers that surrendered in each of the 10 towns in the sixth district, he said. (Tita Roces)
