MANGALDAN—A former police officer who was a high value drug target for illegal drugs and suspected to be involved in gun-for-hire activities was shot dead in an armed encounter in a police buy-bust operation around 12:20 a.m. on Dec. 14 in the boundary here and Mapandan town.

P/Supt. Jeff Fanged, officer-in-charge police chief, identified the fatality as former PO1 Donald Sanchez of San Carlos City, who went on AWOL from the Philippine National Police.

Sanchez was listed as high value target level 2 drug personality in Pangasinan and known to be involved in gun-for-hire operations in Pangasinan and Nueva Ecija.

He was also involved in robbery-hold-up of gasoline stations in the district.

He fired at the poseur-buyer upon sensing that he was transacting with the police in a buy-bust operation prompting joint police operatives from this town, Mapandan and Intelligence Branch of Pangasinan Police Office in coordination with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency to shoot back.

The shootout resulted in his being shot in different parts of his body.

Sanchez was rushed to Mapandan Community Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

A caliber. 45 marked as Gold Cup without serial number used by the Sanchez was recovered in the encounter. Five sachets and a cellular phone that showed his drug transactions were found in Sanchez’s pocket, Fanged said. (Tita Roces/Nora Dominguez/Ding Micua)
