Capitol fetes top woodpushers

8th OPEN CHESS TOURNEY

LINGAYEN– Gov. Amado Espino III led the provincial government on December 18 in honoring the rated chess-players that topped the 8th Governor Amado Espino Cup – Open Chess Tournament, the concluding tournament of the 2016 Pangasinan Chess Festival.

International Master Ronald Dableo of Manila aced the championship in open category and bagged P25,000 and a trophy. He was followed by National Masters David Elorta (Manila) and Sherwin Tiu (Manila) who grabbed the second and third ranks, respectively.

Dennis Gutierrez, III who hails from San Fabian, topped the kiddies category and went home with 10,000 cash prize and a trophy.  Second was Chester Neil Reyes of Bugallon who received 8,000 and a medal.

Espino assured the tournament players that chess clinics and tournaments launched by his father and predecessor, former Governor and now 5th District Rep. Amado T. Espino, Jr., during his term will be sustained.

National Master Giovanni Mejia of San Jacinto was awarded top local player as he ranked 6th in the open category.

Five more local woodpushers fared well in the open chess tourney namely: Prince Mark Aquino of San Nicolas (10th place, open category); Fide Master Narquinden Reyes of Bugallon (16th place, open category; NM Dennis Gutierrez of San Fabian (23rd place, open category); John Rhuiz Bravo of Lingayen (9th place, kiddies category); and Janeya Carbonell of Bolinao (13th place, kiddies category).

Awards were also given to Winifred Boquiren of Malasiqui being the top senior player while Miesha Ann Bautista of Binmaley was awarded youngest participant and top scorer.

Representing University of the Philippines – Diliman, NM Arvie Lozano, was top female player.
