LINGAYEN—Officials of the Pangasinan State University (PSU) recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with government of Japan and Philippines Industry-University Research Institute (Tokyo, Japan) for academic exchange and institutional cooperation in simple rites held at the PSU Convention Hall here.

The agreement, valid for three years, was signed by PSU President Dexter Buted and Masato Sato, chairman of Japan-Philippine Industry-University Research Institute.

The agreement seeks to promote the development of cultural and academic activities in both institutions through cultural exchange/immersion of faculty, staff and students; joint faculty and staff researches/undertaking; exchange of academic information and publications; research and collaboration.

Sato cited the Philippines’ and Japan’s diplomatic relationship for 60 years and acknowledged that “2016 is the turning point of this friendship.”

“Today, it gives significant meaning because it is Japan Fiesta this year, so we are bringing some of our cultures to present them to you,” he said.

During the program, they introduced Japanese culture and in return, they watched Philippine traditional dances as an initial undertaking for their partnership. There were also origami, cooking demonstration, haiku play, shogi tournament and cultural exchange program.

Buted said PSU is blessed with the partnership because Japanese students will learn more of the country’s cultural heritage.

He said their relationship with Japan is one of the programs aligned with the university’s international exchange initiatives and nurtures a sense of empathy and co-existence of people in their region by promoting mutual exchange program and cooperation in the various fields ranging from the arts and culture, sports, to the intellectual exchanges.

Dr. Armando Junio, campus executive director of PSU, said the activity marks the collaboration of two Asian countries focused on promoting culture and arts in the academe and in the society.

In addition to the program with Japan, PSU is also collaborating with Israel to improve and benchmark the agriculture subject with students’ practicum in Israel, and with the Naniang University in Taiwan to promote entrepreneurship in agriculture, Buted said. (Tita Roces, Nora Dominguez)
