SUAL – There is no more stopping the construction of the new coal power plant in the town early next year after President Duterte gave his thumbs-up to the project.

This was announced by Mayor Roberto Arcinue after a brief meeting with the President who visited Sual last week to lead the send-off of 17 Vietnamese fishermen.

Arcinue said the new coal power plant with 900 megawatt of Phinma Energy Corporation that will rise in Barangay Baquioen will bring a basket of benefits to the townspeople including cheaper electricity, scholarship grants for students, more improved programs for health, agriculture, peace and order, and other basic needs.

This projects will be sourced from the P110 million grant promised by the Phinma Energy Corporation once the power plant begins operating and a yearly P5 million grant for the succeeding years of operation.

These benefits, he said, will be in addition to the business and real property taxes that the town will earn from the power plant.

Arcinue challenged the power plant project’s oppositor, the Save Sual Movement, to boycott the electricity produced by the coal power plant and instead use other sources of energy like solar power if they continue to oppose the coal plant. He questioned the motives of the movement.

He said the new power plant will alleviate the impact of the expected power crisis in 2020 to 2021, Arcinue added. (Nora Dominguez)
