THE city government bought the 400 pieces of ‘parol’ made by 39 self-confessed drug users in Barangay Tebeng who surrendered to decorate the city’s main streets, including the De Venecia Highway from Barangay Pantal to Lucao, during the holiday season.

Each ‘parol’ was pegged at P300.

Barangay Tebeng was among the first five barangays in the city declared as drug-free by the Dagupan City Police that earlier implemented ‘Double Barrel’ and ‘Oplan Tokhang’ in the village.

The 39 were trained on how to make Christmas lanterns, an initiative of Punong Barangay Helen F. Fermill to enable them to earn an income for their families. This is in line with the program of the village for the self-confessed who drug users who surrendered called ‘Unang Hakbang.’

Mayor Belen T. Fernandez assured the drug dependents that the city will look for outlets for their finished products. One of these is the city government.

Meanwhile, ‘parol’ will play a big role in the 2016 city fiesta’s program called ‘Parol Stroll’ will be held.

Under the program, business establishments, associations, clubs or any group are urged to join the contest by submitting an entry with a minimum height of 1.5 meters and should bear the name of the sponsoring group. It should also be carried by one or two persons during the stroll.

Submission of entry will be on December 1 for the pre-judging while the final judging will be on December 2 during the Parol and Carol Stroll. (Joseph C. Bacani/CIO)
