THE City Health Office (CHO) on November 11 conducted Operation ‘Suyod’ in Barangays Pantal and Bonuan Gueset, providing free consultation to presumptive tuberculosis (TB) patients under the Alagang Balon Dagupan of Mayor Belen T. Fernandez.

City Health Officer Dr. Sheila Sabado said ‘Suyod’ is an integrated mopping-up operation that seeks to stop TB under the “Hanapin, Gamutin, Pagalingin” TB Caravan of the CHO and the Department of Health (DOH).

The activity was attended by to 154 presumptive tuberculosis patients.

The CHO also conducted free direct sputum smear microscopy, tuberculosis skin test and chest x-ray.

Most affected group was the working age group (24 to 58 years old) and mostly males owing to smoking, drinking habits among others.

“These weaken their immune system and easily expose them to the disease,” said Dr. Aurora Cuison of the CHO’s Anti-TB Section.

Patients falling under Category 1 were given medication for six months while those falling under Category 2 (those who discontinued the program) were given medication for eight months.

Beyond these categories are extreme cases (Category 4) who need 18 to 24 months of medication.

According to DOH, the disease is curable for as long as the patients maintain the discipline needed to improve their immunization. (Joseph C. Bacani/CIO)
