CONTRA ILLEGAL FISHING

THE fishermen and other stakeholders in Barangay Alacan and Nibaliw Narvarte in San Fabian town agreed to cooperate and support government efforts to eradicate illegal fishing in their communities.

The commitment was obtained by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources after a recent dialogue with the fishermen.

BFAR Region 1 Director Nestor Domemden said the dialogue was held to explain to the fishermen all forms of illegal and unsustainable fishing practices, i.e., use of dynamites, fine mess nets and bulibuli.

The fisherfolk were made to understand the need to protect the marine resources to sustain fish supply for their livelihood.

A community pledge was joined by the BFAR, San Fabian municipal government and the San Fabian Police Station.

Domenden assured the fishermen of the government’s support for their livelihood in return for their assistance to the affected fishermen on the implementation of Faith 246 that prohibits the use of Bulibuli and for the displaced fisherfolk on account China’s presence in West Philippine sea.

To support BFAR’s program, Mayor Constante Agbayani, promised to allocate fund for the purchase of equipment for legitimate fishing activities.

As a counterpart, BFAR will establish a marine protected area and fish sanctuary in San Fabian that will serve as the breeding ground of high value fish and other marine species to increase the production of fish.

The dialogue was made as part of the preparation for the expected visit of Department of Agriculture Secretary Manny Pinol. (Nora Dominguez)
