27 BARANGAYS STILL HAVE PUSHERS, USERS

THE Dagupan police confirmed that only Barangay Mamalingling of the 31 villages in the city has so far been declared drug-cleared barangay.

P/Superintendent Neil O. Miro, acting city chief of police, made the clarification as he confirmed that 27 affected barangays remain under Category 2 while three barangays, namely Tebeng, Pogo Grande and Barangay 1 fall under category 3.

Category 1 means a drug laboratory exists in the community; Category 2 indicates there are drug pushers and users in the village, and Category 3 denotes that only presence of users is confirmed in the community.

The Dagupan police explained that for a barangay to be declared drug free, the barangay must confirm the finding with a resolution and affirmed by the police.

Miro also confirmed that to date there are at least 1,269 identified drug personalities in the city out of whom 469 are already named in the watch list while 800 were newly identified.

To date, 949 surrendered while 70 were arrested during police operations.

Only six drug suspects were killed in police operations while 28 drug suspects were evidently summarily killed by still unknown suspects and their deaths are now under investigation.

Miro admitted that some suspects who surrendered or arrested through the Oplan Tokhang supported the campaign and positively identified other drug personalities and their cohorts.

The subsequent arrests of the newly identified drug personalities were a result of police operations. He surmised that deaths of drug suspects by unidentified hitmen now under investigation are believed to have been perpetrated by rival groups involved in illegal drug trade.

The police chief urged the barangay chairmen to continue updating their respective watch lists to effectively support the city government’s campaign against illegal drugs. (With report from CIO)
