URDANETA CITY – The National Irrigation Administration (NIA) recently inked a memorandum of agreement with irrigators and a local government unit to sustain the farm production level.

The MOA was among the NIA, the San Fabian government and the Federation of Irrigators Association of the said town.

Engr. John Celeste, NIA regional manager, said the three parties recognize that the Philippines is one of the most vulnerable countries in Asia to climate change, the efficient supply of water for agriculture is essential.

“To mitigate the impact of climate change in agriculture, it developed a technique to save and use irrigation water more efficiently.” Celeste said.

He told the communication advocacy network conference in Urdaneta City that San Fabian has been implementing the alternate wetting and drying technology (AWD) developed by the International Rice Research Institute which has to be sustained.

“Efficient water management is important for a successful and sustainable rice production,” Celeste added.

Bernie Dispo, president of the Federation of Irrigators Association in San Fabian, express his groups’ gratitude for the continuous help to increase their crop productivity. One-half of San Fabian residents are in the agriculture industry.

Mayor Constante Agbayani assured the group of his administration’s continued support citing the recent P5-million fund allocation for agriculture and palay seedlings to be given free to farmers. Procurement of water pumps worth P100,000 is in the works. (VHS_PIA-Pangasinan)
