Lingayen – Governor Amado ‘Pogi’ I. Espino, III convened municipal and city sports coordinators at the Capitol Resort Hotel on October 13 in preparation for the upcoming Inter-town/city basketball tournament organized by provincial government.

“We are doing this (basketball tournament) for the good of the youth,” Governor Espino told the sports coordinators present during the meeting as he stressed that various sports programs and activities that have been launched are aligned to the youth development agenda of the province.

The sports development plan of the province also forms part of the intervention strategies set by the provincial administration in support of the campaign against illegal drugs.

It was learned that top performers in the basketball league to be participated in by cagers (18 – 25 years) get chances of joining pool of elite players of Team Pangasinan to be organized.

Municipal and city team will be clustered for a series of elimination games; winners will advance to the quarter finals, semi – finals and top two teams will battle for supremacy in the championship game.

Noting the various sports programs initiated and maintained by the provincial government, Governor Espino eyes the launching of a ‘festival of sports’ to feature the province’s sports talents and exhibit the comprehensive sports development master plan of the province.

The provincial chief executive likewise disclosed that preparations are undertaken by the provincial government in cooperation with the Department of Education for the establishment of Pangasinan Sports Academy within the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center which shall become the in-house training school of promising and young Pangasinense athletes.

Meanwhile, Provincial Sports Consultant Modesto Operania noted that the meeting of municipal and city coordinators that was also joined by Malasiqui Mayor Noel Geslani was conducted for the first time to serve as the opening salvo of the lined-up sports programs and activities conceptualized by the governor.

Operania emphasized that a player’s eligibility shall be strictly observed.

Also present during the activity were: Provincial Information Officer Orpheus Velasco and Dr. Edilberto Abalos of the Samahang Basketbolista ng Pilipinas, who expounded on the guidelines and technical rules of the inter-town/city basketball tournament. /Mark Gerry Naval Oblanca
