DTI acts on defective products

MANGALDAN – If a consumer receives a defective product and the store retailer refuses to replace it, there is hope for the consumer.

If a complaint is filed with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), DTI calls on the retailers to replace the defective items. If the retailers refuse to replace the item on complaint, at least three mediation meetings are conducted by DTI.

In Pangasinan, defective cellphones top the list of complaints among consumers.

DTI Provincial Director Peter Mangabat told the consumer welfare forum held in Mangaldan town recently that in most cases the complaints don’t reach the third mediation level, the retailer replaces the unit or refunds the customer.

Marjury Lorezco, DTI specialist, discussed the Consumer Act and underscored the eight basic rights of consumers while Engr. Guillermo Avelino discussed the products covered by mandatory standards and the price act on profiteering. Other discussants in the forum include the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and the Department of Energy. (VHS/PIA-Pangasinan)
