THE 1,070 residents at the District Jail of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Bonuan Gueset again received medical attention from doctors and nurses of the City Health Office on October 11 on the occasion of the National Correctional Consciousness Week.

The city health office also gave the inmates free medicines and free tooth extraction using the mobile dental bus of the city.

Under the ‘Alagang Balon Dagupan’ program of Mayor Belen T. Fernandez, the inmates of the BJMP became part of the health program of the city in consideration of their physical condition while in confinement in the already congested city jail.

The facility has been constructed to accommodate only around 200 inmates but the total jail population has already exceeded 1,000.

Most of the inmates are facing cases in court for violation of Republic Act 9165, also known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.

Dr. Sheila Sabado, officer-in-charge at the City Health Office, said the free medical-dental mission is a regular program of the city health office for the inmates of the city jail.

Among the identified most common illness or diseases suffered by the inmates according to Sabado are cold, flu, fever and skin disease.

“This is probably due to the condition of the inmates inside their quarters,” said Sabado.

The Dagupan City inmates expressed their gratitude to Mayor Fernandez for looking into their health and the welfare. (Joseph C. Bacani/CIO)
