4Ps farmers complete organic farming training

SAN FABIAN—The 115 farmers, 44 of whom are Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries, who completed the 12-week Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan farmers’ training program received their certificates issued by SM Foundation Inc., Harbest Agribusiness Corp., Department of Social Services and Development (DSWD) and the Department of Agriculture.
“After two months, we already harvested the vegetables that we planted, so it is really an advantage that we have learned new technologies,” said Josephine O. Linda, a 4Ps parent leader.
Riziel Ann Carpio, project development officer of the Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP) of DSWD regional office, said the training program provided 4Ps beneficiaries the opportunity to develop their own sustainable source of food and income right from their own backyard or farm since the three-month traditional timetable for planting and harvesting vegetables is reduced to only two months.
The participants were taught that fertilizers and insect repellants needed in planting can be acquired in their own backyard and at the same time protect the environment from harmful chemicals found in non-organic fertilizers.
Meanwhile, SLP proposed a starter kit valued at Php 400,000 be given to the San Fabian Organic Farmers and Fisherfolks Association (SOFFA.) of the 44 Pantawid Pamilya beneficiaries.
SLP Community Driven Enterprise Development Officer (CDEDO) Ardel Laroya said the starter kit will be spent to buy seeds from Harbest Agribusiness Corp. to enable the 4Ps beneficiaries who completed the training to start applying their training on organic farming in their own backyard or modest farm.
The training program is funded by SM Foundation, Inc., with Harbest Agribusiness Corp. in cooperation with the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Unit 1. (DSWD-1)
