LINGAYEN– Pangasinan seeking a grand slam when it vies for its third National Quality Corn Achievers Award (NQCAA) for this year.

Dalisay Moya, in-charge of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAg), presented to the national evaluation panel the province’s best practices that catapulted Pangasinan as the country’s sixth largest corn producer.

Pangasinan accounts for 80 percent of the total corn production of the Ilocos Region.

Governor Amado “Pogi” I. Espino, III, expressed high hopes that Pangasinan will again bag the award which it won in 2013 and 2014 in its bid to join the elite circle of Philippine’s best corn producing provinces.

He said he takes pride in the high quality yield of the Pangasinan corn industry that enabled the province to win the NQCAA award for two straight years, with possibly a third national award this year.

Pangasinan is the only province with a five-year Provincial Corn Road Map from 2013-2017 which “seeks to obtain sufficient and stable supply of high quality corn to increase the income of farmers through good agricultural practices and ecologically smart technologies.”

From 2012-2015, overall corn production in Pangasinan registered an increasing trend in volume, area harvested and yield, owing to the corn production activities initiated by the provincial government.

The visiting evaluation team from DA was led by Diana Belo, officer-in-charge at the Toxicology Laboratory of the Bureau of Animal Industry. (PIO)
