LINGAYEN –- The four-month long series of chess clinics that start on September 17-18 and 24 – 25 kick-off the 2016 Pangasinan Chess Festival, the biggest and most popular local sporting event initiated by the provincial government.

Participants to the chess clinics will be entitled to free registration to the festival.

The first festival was organized in 2011 under the administration of former governor and now 5th district Representative Amado T. Espino, Jr. in partnership with the Pangasinan Chess League (PCL).

In a meeting with PCL officials last August, Governor Amado “Pogi” I. Espino, III vowed to continue the chess clinics and tournaments initiated by his predecessor.

Provincial Sports Director Modesto Operania said the chess clinics help train and prepare chess players and enthusiasts who participate in the festival’s tournaments.

The Pangasinan chess fest, according to Operania, has also produced notable chess champions that include Grand Master–elect Haridas Pascua of Mangatarem town, an active participant in the chess clinics and tournaments.

Activities of the chess fest include: Governor Espino Chess Clinic, 6th Pangasinan Age Group Chess Championship, 6th Pangasinan Chess Championship and Governor Amado Espino Open Chess Championship.
