Mangaldan honors 2 farmers for developing new rice varieties

MANGALDAN—Two farmers were recognized by the municipal council here for developing new varieties of rice.

Dionesio Frianeza and Samuel Gorospe both of Barangay Malabago this town were cited by the town’s sanggunian for their successful experiment.

Frianeza was able to crossbreed PSB Rc 14 by Jasmine which will be registered as BONA I Rice while Gorospe was able to crossbreed G11 (F6) by NSIC Rc 216 which will be registered as BONA II Rice.

BONA I Rice has the following agronomic data: the Average Plant Height is 110 centimeters; The Average Number of Productive Tillers is 25; the Average Number of Unproductive Tillers is only 5; the Average Length of Panicle is 20 centimeters; the Average Number of Spikelets/ Panicle is 170 -180 spikelets/ Panicle; the Milling Recovery is 60-70 percent; the Eating Quality has been described as “malambot (soft)” and aromatic; and the Average Yield per Hectare is that for Main Cropping is 4.5 to 5 tons per hectare and for Second Cropping is 5.5 to 6 tons per hectare;

BONA II Rice with the following agronomic data: the Average Plant Height is 100 centimeters; The Average Number of Productive Tillers is 22; the Average Number of Unproductive Tillers is only 10; the Average Length of Panicle is 20 centimeters; the Average Number of Spikelets/ Panicle is 180 to 185 spikelets/ Panicle; the Milling Recovery is 65 to 70 percent; the Eating Quality has been described as “malambot”; and the Average Yield per Hectare is that for Main Cropping is 4.5 to 5 tons per hectare and for Second Cropping is 5.5 to 6 tons per hectare;

“The introduction of these new farmer-developed rice varieties is a significant accomplishment for the municipality, since it is not often that farmers come up with new varieties of rice that best suits local conditions,” Councilor Aldrin Soriano, author of resolution, said.

Soriano, chairman of the town council’s Committee on Agriculture, said said there is a need to acknowledge that this farmer-developed rice varieties came from Mangaldan, Pangasinan through the efforts of farmers and the assistance of the Local Government Unit.

He added he also drafted an ordinance for Farmers’ Seed Registry to protect the Intellectual Property Rights of the farmers. (Tita Roces)
