THE Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP), in a special session on September 14, approved a resolution requesting the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA) for funding assistance for the construction of a boardwalk and esplanade along Pantal-Lucao De Venecia Extension Highway (Phase I).

The city needs Php580,000,000 for the project, the development and promotion of the tourism potential of the Pantal-Lucao De Venecia Extension highway.

SP Deputy Presiding Pro tempore Jose Netu M. Tamayo, author of the resolution, said that the project will not just boost the city’s tourism industry but will also provide for a new source of income for the city.

“In furtherance of this endeavor, there is a need to request the TIEZA for funding assistance pursuant to Republic Act No. 9593 or “The Tourism Act of 2009”.” said Tamayo.

The Tourism Act of 2009 declares as national policy for tourism to become an engine of investment, employment, growth and national development, and strengthening the Department of Tourism (DOT) and its attached agencies to effectively and efficiently implement policy, and appropriating funds thereof.

TIEZA is an agency under the DOT responsible for implementing policies and programs of the department pertaining to the development, promotion, and supervision of tourism projects in the country.

Tamayo hopes that the resolution will merit the attention of the DOT in order to establish the area as among the centers of tourism in the country. (Joseph C. Bacani/CIO)
