THE city gave one banca each to some 85 local fishermen, especially fish pen caretakers of Carael, Calmay and Salapingao on August 30 to be used for their alternative source of livelihood as part of the city government’s unrelenting campaign against illegal fishpens.

Mayor Belen T. Fernandez said the bancas are only the first batch that the city is providing for free under her regular livelihood program. The second batch will comprise of 84 more bancas to be given to as many local fishermen.

Mayor Fernandez led the distribution of the bancas with the assistance of City Agriculture Officer Emma J. Molina.

She said five more bancas will be allotted for Barangays Lucao, Bonuan Gueset and Tebeng, while two other bancas are being reserved for the City Agriculture Office to be used in the river clean up drive.

In return, the recipients signed a contract pledging that the bancas will be solely used by them for fishing, will not be for sale and that they will help the city in its campaign in cleaning the rivers from trash, especially plastic bags and others.

Alagaan natin ang ilog dahil mawawalan ng saysay ang mga bangkang ito kung wala din tayong mahuhuling isda dahil sa pollution,” said Fernandez.

The recipients were also provided with one ‘sagwan’ each for free.

Fernandez said that 30 bamboo rafts are set to be given to the fisherfolk of Barangay Calmay. (Joseph C. Bacani/CIO)
