Chess Festival kicks off this month

LINGAYEN – It’s official. The annual Pangasinan Chess Festival will be held starting this month, September.

Gov. Amado I. Espino III, gave officials of the Pangasinan Chess League (PCL) and provincial sports director Modesto Operania the ‘go signal’ to stage the festival during the courtesy call of PCL President Juan Vicente Sison last month.

Sison assured the governor that preparations were in full-swing for the staging of the series of chess clinic as preliminary round for the popular annual chess tournaments of the festival.

“Sustaining all sports programs of my father will be a legacy of the Espino brand of leadership,” said Gov. Pogi, a sports buff.

Products of the province’s successful sports development program included Grand Master–elect Haridas Pascua from Mangatarem town, Fide Masters Samantha Glo Revita of Rosales and others who hail from various towns and cities in the province.

Component activities of the chess fest include: Governor Espino Chess Clinic, 6th Pangasinan Age Group Chess Championship, 6th Pangasinan Chess Championship and Governor Amado Espino Open Chess Championship.

A prelude to the chess festival, the series of chess clinic scheduled on September 17-18 and 24-25 serves as the avenue to train the chess players and enthusiasts who shall participate in the upcoming chess tournaments.
