P’sinan cyclist Catalan sacked from PH team

THREE-time Southeast Asia (SEA) Games gold medalist Alfie Catalan of Pangasinan was unceremoniously sacked by the national cycling body PhilCycling in the national track team, effectively disqualifying him from joining the 29th SEA Games to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on August 19-31, 2017. Reason: His age at 34, and his poor performance abroad two years ago.

Catalan, from Barangay Cabacaraan, San Manuel town told The PUNCH that his expulsion from the national squad was unfair because it was arbitrary and there was no due process in considering his case.

“My coach Carlo Jasul just told me that I was kicked out from national team because of my age and my poor performance during my last stint overseas,” said Catalan, a 5’11”, standout in cycling.

“Yes, I admitting that I was off during the Taiwan competition but PhilCycling should have held a qualifying race for all of aspirants to find out if who’s really the fittest and strongest in track racing but that didn’t happen, so what they did is unfair,” Catalan said.

He added he already wrote letters to Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chair William Ramirez and to the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) headed by Jose Cojuangco to protest his arbitrary expulsion. (Jesus Garcia, Jr.)
