SURPRISE DRUG TESTING

BINMALEY— Despite death threats for his unwavering support to President Duterte’s war on drugs, there was no stopping the town’s mayor from requiring municipal employees and barangay officials here to take the drug tests over a two-day period, Aug. 16 and 17.

Municipal officials were surprised by Mayor Simplicio Rosario’s announcement about the mandatory drug test after their Monday flag raising ceremony.

The barangay officials were next to be required to take the drug test the following day. Both tests were administered by the Crime Laboratory of the Philippine National Police.

Mayor Rosario said he received another death threat through a letter for refusing to stop his campaign on illegal drugs. He alerted authorities about it.

“This is not my program but this is to show our total support to the campaign of President Duterte,” Rosario said.

Rosario thanked barangay officials for cooperating with the campaign.

He pleaded with them to urge their family members or friends who are involved in illegal drugs to surrender.

He said, those found positive among the town employees and barangays officials will be processed by the police for possible rehabilitation.

When Rosario initially launched an intensified anti-illegal drugs drive with the police, only 54 self-confessed drug users and pushers surrendered. Today, there are almost 500 that surrendered. “I expect more to come out,” he said.

He also appealed to the barangay officials to be fair in listing suspected drug personalities in their areas and not to be afraid to lose votes in the forthcoming elections.

He said Malacanang issued a memorandum directing the mayors to rid their areas of illegal drugs or they shall be charged administratively and be accused as drug coddler or protector.

Rosario said that results of the tests have not been released at presstime. (Tita Roces)
