LINGAYEN— From January to July 10 of this year, the Provincial Health Office (PHO) already recorded 21 cases with three deaths due to leptospirosis.

According to PHO chief, Dr. Anna De Guzman, citing the deaths of a farmer and two construction workers, she said “high risk sa leptospirosis ang farmers dahil panahon na ng pagtatanim at ‘yong mga construction workers na naglilinis ng kanal.

However, the number of cases this year compared to same period last year is lower by 16%, with two deaths.

De Guzman advised the public to take precautionary measures such as by using rain boots especially for those people with jobs which are high-risk in leptospirosis because of their exposure to water contaminated with the leptospira bacteria.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection transmitted by many animals, such as rodents & other vermin. Entry of the said bacteria are through wounds.

At the same time, the PHO head warned the public of other water-borne diseases as water contamination, dengue, and viral infections as cough, colds, and fever.

She advised the sterilization of water coming from faucets for drinking and cooking purposes.

The public may also use hydrochloride solution to be mixed with the water as a disinfectant, she added. (Johanne Macob)
