WITH less than 100 days before the October 1 Sangguniang Kabataan elections, only 10,267 have registered from July 15 to 20, records from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) showed.

Lawyer Marino Salas, provincial elections supervisor, however told The PUNCH Thursday in an interview that he expects the number to dramatically increase during weekends.

He is optimistic the number of SK registrants would balloon since an intensive information dissemination campaigns as well as sent notices have been sent to local government units, barangays and school principals.

He added that about 600,000 voters with ages 18 to 30, can be expected.

Under the amended law, those who will vote for SK are aged 15 to 30 while those who can be candidates are between ages 18 to 24.

Meanwhile, Salas said only 6,723 have registered so far over the same period for the barangay polls (18 years and above) while 1,688 registered for reactivation, 324 applied for change of name, 391 for correction of entries and 23 for overseas absentee voting.

He said even with the low numbers, Pangasinan is still faring than most provinces.

The deadline for registration will be on July 30 at 5:00 p.m. All local Comelec offices are open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., including Saturdays and Sundays and holidays, Salas said.

The Comelec clarified that that no applications for transfer of voter registration records will be entertained. (Tita Roces)
