Espino vows continued support for PWDs

LINGAYEN– Gov. Amado Espino III underscored the need to change public perception about PWDs or Persons with Disabilities as he vowed continued support for them by the provincial government.

Espino spoke during the 38th National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation celebration at President’s Hotel here on June 20. The occasion coincided with the PWD Sensitivity Training organized by the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO).

The governor urged the representatives from the education and private sectors, including municipal, and city executives, who participated in the PWD sensitivity training discussion to promote the cause of PWDs in their respective communities.

On the same occasion, the governor distributed assistive devices such as wheelchairs, walkers and crutches to 30 PWDs and cash incentives to PWDs who won medals during the Philippine Sports for Differently-Abled (PhilSPDA) National Paralympic Games in March.

Gold medalists in PhilSPDA received Php 8,000 each while silver medalists Php6,000 and Php4,000 for bronze medalists.

Among the topics discussed during the sensitivity training included mobility impairment, speech and hearing impairment, sensitivity to learning, early detection and, sensitivity to vision impairment.

Meanwhile, Gov. Espino said he will consider supporting a proposal to put up a facility especially for the persons with disabilities (PWDs) that was discussed

during the opening program of the PWD Sensitive Training on July 20.

He said he will meet with concerned agencies and organizations to study the proposal.

Matagal nang hinihiling na magkaroon sila (PWDs) ng facility,” said Espino of the center which is initially envisioned to be a venue for trainings, among other events, concerning the PWDs.

“We like to give them a chance in life that despite them being physically challenged, they are still capable to provide not only for themselves but also for their family,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, David Bulario, president of the Federation of PWDs in Pangasinan, thanked the government for their support such as in the form of livelihood assistance and trainings to their group.

“Wala ng namamalimos dahil sa programa ng pamahalaan,” he said.
