Dagupan SP majority heads all committees

AFTER the election of officers of the new Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) of Dagupan, the majority composed of seven councilors – against four in the minority – asserted its numbers in cornering all the major committees.

However, the approval of their internal rules adopted during their first regular session on July 5 was deferred till the next session on July 12 and voted to adopt the chamber’s old rules in the meanwhile in order to proceed with the discussion of the calendared agenda.

The newly elected SP officers are Councilors Maybelyn dela Cruz Fernandez and Alvin Coquia as Majority Floor Leader and Assistant Majority Floor Leader respectively, and Councilors Jeslito “Jigs” Seen and Jose Netu Tamayo as as SP Presiding Protempore and Deputy Presiding Protempore, respectively.

Councilor Red Erfe Mejia was elected minority floor leader while Councilor Chito Samson is assistant minority leader.

Meanwhile, Mr. Seen was also voted to chair the committees on Agriculture and Fisheries, Appropriations, Arts, Culture and Heritage, Environment and Natural Resources, Senior Citizens Affairs, and Economic Affairs.

Councilor Dennis Canto will chair the committees on Health and Sanitation and Public Market.

Mr. Tamayo will chair the committees on Dangerous Drugs, Education, Land Utilization, Public Information and Media, Laws, Ordinances and Judiciary, and Peace and Order while Councilor Marvin Fabia will chair the Local and International Relations and the Housing and Urban Development.

Mr. Coquia is chairman of the committees on Tourism, Trade and Industry, Youth and Sports Development, Transportation and Public Utilities, and Public Works and Infrastructure, while Liga ng mga Barangay President Lino Fernandez takes the Barangay Affairs committee.

Councilor Maybelyn is also the chairperson on the committees on Rules and Procedure, Women, Children and Family Affairs; Labor and Employment, and Social Welfare and Community Development.

Mr. Erfe-Mejia will head the committees on Cooperative and Livelihood Development, Population and Demography, Poverty Alleviation, and People’s Participation.

Councilors, Nicanor Aquino and Guillermo Vallejos were not given any committee to head. (JCB_CIO)
