THE Commission on Election (Comelec) Pangasinan provincial office called on Pangasinenses with ages 15 and above to register in the different election offices in the province from July 15 to 30 to be able to vote in the upcoming Katipunang Kabataan (KK) and barangay elections this October 31.

Atty. Marino Salas, provincial election supervisor said the new law, the Republic Act 10742 or better known as the SK Reform Act of 2015 signed into law by then President Benigno Aquino III, changes the age coverage of qualified voters for KK.

Originally, the age coverage for KK is 15 to 17 years old only but the amended law provides that KK covers ages from 15 to 30 years old.

Salas clarified that those of legal age, from 18 to 30 years old who were able to vote in the recent national election need not register again.

However, those who were not able to register and vote in the last election will still be entertained by the Comelec.

“We have a system that will extract regular voters who are qualified to vote for SK from the lists”, said Salas.

The estimated number of regular voters qualified for KK is around 30% of the total number of voters.

Salas said the election offices will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. even on weekends starting July 15 until July 30.

Registrants must bring a valid identification card (ID) and birth certificate.

Meanwhile, the Comelec still awaits the internal rules and regulations (IRR) for the filing of the certificates of candidacy (COC) by the KK aspirants.

As provided by the SK reform law, candidates should be between 18 to 24 years old. (Hilda Austria)
