Pozorrubio’s ‘Rubio Cop’ goes back to school

POZORRUBIO—Not only the town’s schoolchildren will be going back to school next week but also this town’s “Rubio Cop.”

“Rubio Cop”, a mascot likened to the “Robo Cop” (the popular cyberpunk action movie that centered on the character of a police officer) will be visiting schools again to provide kids with flyers about what-to-dos to avoid being victims of crimes.

P/Chief Inspector Ryan Manongdo, town police chief, said Rubio Cop’s school hopping starts on June 13, carrying a mission with a theme “Ang krimen ay maiiwasan sa tamang pag-iingat at kaalaman (Crime can be prevented with proper care and knowledge)”.

Among the basic information “Rubio Cop” will impart are: 1) Not to talk to or go with strangers, 2) Refuse to accept any food like candy or drinks offered by an unknown person, 3) Avoid wearing or bringing expensive items in school, 4) Not to go out of school until class is dismissed, and 5) To alert their teachers or parents about untoward incidents like fire or accident.

“Rubio Cop” was introduced in December last year as the town police’s ambassador of goodwill to the town’s school children. Its initial mission then was to advise them to avoid firecrackers during the Christmas season and New Year revelry.

Rubio Cop, a name lifted from the last five letters of their town’s name, did classroom hopping.

Manongdo said he conceptualized an image that would catch the attention of children while the police educate them against intentional and unintentional injuries, and to reduce the chances to be involved in accidents and disasters. (Tita Roces)
