RESIDENTS living in hazardous areas like on banks of rivers and creeks will soon find new homes that are free from flood or storm surge under the city’s UnliSerbisyo Free Housing Project.

Mayor Belen T. Fernandez announced that 400 houses will be made available for free to families living in rivers and creeks.

She said the UnliSerbisyo Free Housing Project will be constructed in Sitio Longos in Barangay Bonuan Boquig.

The mayor made it clear that only families who are willing to be relocated will be included in the list, clarifying that the city will not force any family to relocate and opts to remain in their present location and in evacuation centers whenever calamity strikes.

“This housing project is only for those who are willing to settle to a new home in a new area away from the place where they had been staying for years. We are not forcing everyone, but we hope they avail of this opportunity to move to new and safe houses for free.”, said Fernandez.

The mayor assured the interested families that the unit will be ready for occupancy once they leave their place.

She, however, warned that the units are not for sale and it should be occupied personally by the beneficiaries. Otherwise, this will be forfeited in favor of the city.

“Once they leave the place, we will no longer allow anyone to return or others to construct new houses in the areas to be vacated because we are in the process of cleaning the rivers and the creeks as part of our flood mitigating measures,” added Fernandez.

The City Social Welfare and Development Office has began listing families who want to avail of the project.

“Once the list is finalized, we shall start with the construction of the housing units,” Mayor Fernandez assured.

The project is being financed by the Department of Social Welfare and Development DSWD) in the amount of P50 million with counterpart from the city government. The National Housing Authority (NHA) has also signified its intention to support the project. (JCB_CIO)
