Distressed Sta. Barbara’s OFW gets P240,000 aid

OFW Jasson Cayabyab (right) arrives at an amicable settlement with his recruitment agency, as he was paid with P240,000 as settlement amount for the labor dispute. The OFW was assisted by OWWA through the Single Entry Approach (SENA), a conciliation-mediation approach to labor dispute settlement.

AN Overseas Filipino Worker who experienced distress and displacement in Saudi Arabia received his P240,000 money claim from his local recruitment agency (LRA).

This, after the claim of Jasson Cayabyab, 33, of Sta. Barbara, who did not extend any assistance when he was unjustly incarcerated in his jobsite, was processed by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), through its Single Entry Approach (SENA), a conciliation-mediation process for labor dispute resolution initiated by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

Cayabyab went to Saudi Arabia in September 2014 to seek greener pasture as family driver. He was surprised, however, when his foreign employer started making him do construction works and experienced unjust working conditions such as lack of food and sleep, and overwork.

He was also jailed for almost eight months after his employer falsely accused him of charges and was deported back to the Philippines on April 2016.

Upon his return, he immediately filed for a Request for Assistance (RFA) for the SENA before the OWWA Regional Welfare Office I in San Fernando City, La Union.

OIC Director Sergio B. Borgueta Jr. and OIC PSD Gerardo C. Rimorin, as SENA desk officers, facilitated Cayabyab’s request.

An amicable settlement was reached after 26 days and was paid P240,000 which covered the OFW’s unpaid salaries, other work-related compensations and the airline ticket expenses which the OFW bore when he returned home.

“I thank the OWWA RWOI Officers for extending assistance to me and family, from the time I was imprisoned overseas, up to now that I have claimed compensations due me,” Cayabyab said.

OFW Cayabyab’s case yielded the biggest settlement relief handled by the OWWA RWOI so far.

From January to May 2016, the agency has already facilitated the amicable settlement of eight labor disputes through the SENA. (Justin D. Marbella_OWWA RWOI)
