Cyclist dies in road accident

SAN FABIAN—A 66-year-old cyclist who was to celebrate his birthday, May 26, or five days later when he died after he was hit by a speeding tricycle while he was riding his mountain bike along the national highway in Barangay Tempra-Guilig this town Saturday morning.

The fatality, Julian Placido, resident of Barangay Angio this town was declared dead on arrival at the Region 1 Medical Center in Dagupan City where he was rushed for treatment.

The suspect was identified as Ernesto Tiamson Jr, 26, driver and resident of Barangay Bantayan, Mangaldan.

Tiamson’s tricycle was heading towards north direction when it encroached the left lane hitting Placido’s mountain bike coming from opposite direction in the process.

Tiamson escaped after the incident but was arrested by the police in a hot pursuit operation.

PUNCH’s sportswriter, Jesus “Jess” Garcia, three-time national Tour champion in 1973 and 1977 said Placido was riding from Damortis, La Union for his routine exercise with other cyclists returning to San Fabian town when the tragic accident happened.

He said Placido joined local cycling races for 60 years old and above category and always managed to finish in top 10. (Tita Roces)
