THE police in Region 1 arrested 273 persons and seized 201 assorted firearms for violation of the gun ban since January 10.

Chief Supt. Velasquez, Police Regional Office 1 (PRO1) regional director said 123 were arrested in Pangasinan, 49 in La Union, 35 in Ilocos Sur and 50 in Ilocos Norte for carrying firearms, gun replicas, explosives and bladed weapons.

The seized firearms were composed of 70 high powered and 131 low powered firearms.

Of the 273 persons arrested, 257 were civilians, two were police members, 10 were government employees and four were security guards.

Meanwhile, Velasquez said the security preparations and deployment plans of the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office to safeguard the conduct of secure and fair elections in coordination with the counterparts from the Armed Forces of the Philippines are ready and precautionary measures have been prepared especially in places under election watchlist areas.

About 900 police personnel underwent pre-deployment orientation seminar and will be deployed on May 2 to polling centers in the region. (Tita Roces)
