Villasis rider conquers Mapandan cycling

VILLASIS come-backing amateur rider Bonijoe Martin raced mightily over the long and challenging scorching course and raced in an impressive speed in the last 300 meters to nip breakaway partner Gerald Valdez of Cabanatuan City by a bike length to capture the 2016 Mapandan Cycling Challenge last April 17.

Martin, 23, who almost missed the cut due to his technical status as an ex-pro cyclist, and Valdez, clocked the 132.7 kilometers in three hours two minutes and eight seconds to bag the P5,000 top prize plus a trophy while Valdez pocketed P4,000 and also with a trophy.

Oliver Espiritu of San Manuel outsprinted the second pack of nine riders, two minutes 10 seconds adrift and collected P3,000 and also with a trophy while Warren Bordeos of Laoac and Manaoag’s revitalized pedal-pusher Ericson Obosa landed fourth and fifth worth P2,000 and P1,000, respectively, plus medal each.
Rounding up the top ten who received P500 and a medal apiece were Ven Daniel Cariño (Mangaldan); Kenneth Krog (Caloocan City); Joel Balucos (Manila); Lawrence Mendoza (Subic, Zambales); Resty Aragon (Manila).

“We will continue to stage the bikefest every year during our town fiesta celebration to search for new talents from the province, ” said the hizzoner Maximo M. Calimlim, Jr.

The 52 participants were flagged off by municipal councilors Jimmy Aquino and Dooy Penuliar.

The top three winners of the executive division were Joefrey Sodong of Binalonan, Jovy Jovellanos of Manaoag and Rogelio Flores of Binalonan, while the grandmaster category’s top three finishers were Joel Bumanlag and Nol Espino of Dagupan City and Alex Jugo of San Fabian. (Jesus Garcia Jr.)
