BAYAMBANG—An influential businessman running for mayor here has asked the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to place the town under the poll body’s control after it was listed as number one in the election watch list areas (EWAS) or hotspots in the May 9 elections.

Dr. Cezar Quiambao who is running as an independent candidate, told local newsmen Tuesday that he has written the Comelec about his request.

Quiambao said his request to place the town under Comelec control is now being processed even as the police are doing threat assessment.

He said he already reported to the police all that his opponents are doing “that are contrary to laws” and have filed charges against them,” he added.

He said three cases have been filed against his opponents.

He said incumbent candidates have many advantages and some over-bearing barangay captains deny them the use of barangay plaza for their campaign.

“We do not use force or intimidation but we obey laws,” Quiambao said stressing that the people have complained about these abuses.

“There are what you call silent majority among barangay officials who are with us,” he added.

Meanwhile, P/Superintendent Gregorio Galsim, town police chief, said the police have prepared security plans to secure the 54 polling precincts.

This town and 19 other areas in Pangasinan are listed by the Philippine National Police under EWAS due to intense political rivalry and history of violent incidents during elections. (Tita Roces)
